  • RONALDO IN THE RECORD BOOKS
  • NEYMAR AND KANE MISSING IN A SPAIN DOMINATED TEAM.
  • GUARDIOLA DULY REPRESENTED
  • TALKING POINTS
The UEFA team of the year list released today featured Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as expected. This selection based on the vote of football fans was released by UEFA after 8.8 million sport lovers around the world cast their votes. Before I give you further observations, please take a look at the list in a 4-4-2 lineup.

Buffon
Marcelo, Chiellini, Ramos, Dani Alves
Hazard, Modric, Kroos, De Bruyne
Ronaldo, Messi

Record for Ronaldo: This is the 12th appearance for Balon D'or holder Cristiano Ronaldo who is one of five Madrid representatives. After making the team in 2004, he took a break and returned with a bang in 2007 and has been consistent since then. He can take the record even further by retaining his position when 2018 team of the year is released.

Neymar and Kane missing: Brazilian sensation who falls short of only Ronaldo and  Messi is a notable absentee. Many have even construed his move to PSG as an attempt to walk out of Lionel Messi's shadow and it is quite a surprise to see a list of the year without him. Also missing is English forward and Tottenham striker, Harry Kane who have had a blistering year with more than 50 goals to his name. Their omission could be traced to the list containing just two forwards as well as the blistering form of Hazard and De Bruyne.

Guardiola duly represented: From 2008 when he was appointed coach of Barcelona through 2013  when he left, more than 20 spots in the list were occupied by his players. Before  leaving Bayern in 2016, players like Manuel Neur, Arjen Robben, David Alaba and Jerome Boateng made the list. Under the tutelage of the Catalan, De Bruyne becomes the first ever Manchester City FC player to have made the XI.

First for Belgium: Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard became the first Belgians to be represented in the Team of the Year. Hazard was in sensational form for Belgium during the European Qualifiers with six goals in eight games as well as five assists.

Sergio Ramos record vote: The Madrid captain received the most votes with 588,315 sport fans expressing their overwhelming belief in the Spaniard's defensive prowess. He has also carved a niche for himself by scoring when it matter most. He will no doubt be mentioned in the roll call of defenders of all time.
