The Facts About UNIBEN Students' Protest

On Monday, the 5th of February 2018, some students of the University of Benin staged a protest disallowing students from taking lectures in their lecture theaters.

Here are some of the facts;

  • The Protest was held because of the rustication of SUG(Student Union Government) Executives by the school authorities.

  • The rustication of the SUG executives, namely the SUG President and, the Secretary General was for 1 academic session, but that of the PRO who led last year's protest is for 2 academic sessions.

  • The Protest is as a result of a similar protest held last year, where the Chancellor's(Emir Lamido Sanusi) convoy was stopped by protesting students.

  • The school authority has yet to react to the development as students fear what may result if there is a clash of interests between the students and the school.

  • The earlier protest was as a result of the hike in school and hostel fees by the school authorities with increments of about 300%.
