Why Quebec Refuses To Welcome CryptoMiners

The Canadian Province Quebec, known for its cheap hydropower has temporarily put a stop to cryptomining activities in the region.
Les Affaires, a Canadian newspaper, reported that operators working with Utility firm, Hydro-Quebec are turning down new clients and this is because of the demands put on the Hydro-power plant.

  • The region has been a hotcake for crypto-miners looking for cheap power to mine cryptocurrency.
  • Quebec's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Pierre Moreau expressed frustration over cryptomining; they require so much energy but bring so little jobs when compared with other factories that use as much energy.
  • He also expressed pessimism over the ability of the region to continually meet up with cryptominers' energy requirements.
  • A Hydro-Quebec document seemed to agree with him saying that the facility would not be able to keep up with the demands of every facility that wants to set up operation.
  • According to the newspaper, the plant had received projects presenting projecting thousands of megawatts.
What region in your country do you think Cryptominers could thrive?
